How exactly does the whole datamatrix codes thing work?

ok, i recently bought the amanda project books. I went to the website and download the software to my phone. I did the instructions in the book but when i go to beetagg and go to scan and put it over the code, nothing happens. I don't exactly know how to do this, can somebody explain it to me?
